It is SPRING and that means LIVER time in Chinese Medicine.  Spring is associated with the Wood element and the organs liver and gall bladder.  Not only does the liver detoxify the blood, it is also in charge of the free and easy flow of energy throughout the body.  What happens when your liver is not functioning it's best?

Common symptoms of a stagnant liver

  • Nervous system disorders
  • Allergies
  • Lumps, swellings
  • Distended abdomen
  • Chronic indigestion
  • Menstrual problems
  • Stress, neck, and back tension
  • Fatigue
  • Rigid, inflexible body
  • Eye problems
  • Skin disorders
  • Anger, frustration, moodiness
  • Depression
  • Impatience, edginess, negativity

How can you love and care for your liver as it transitions us from the dark days of winter to the sunny days of summer?  Here are a few suggestions:

  • Start your day off with a warm glass of purified water and lemon juice.  This helps kick-start the digestion process for the day.
  • Add green leafy vegetables to your daily diet.  Greens, which are extremely high in chlorophyll are able to neutralize heavy metals and chemicals.  Examples of leafy greens are:
    • kale, collard greens, turnip greens, chard, spinach
  • Liver cleansing herbs such as dandelion root, milk thistle, and turmeric can be incorporated into the diet.
  • Processed foods are a huge burden on the liver.  Cutting them out of your diet will give you such relief!
  • Exercise!  Moving your body generates the smooth flow of energy.  (Yoga is great for detoxifying!  All the twists and bends squeeze those toxins right out of your liver!)
  • Acupuncture can assist in moving and unblocking any stuck energy in your body.
  • Ease the liver's job of clearing toxins from your blood by doing a cleanse.
